Legal Update - 01 July 2026

Section 81 of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 came into force on 29 June 2026, repealing the Vagrancy Act 1824 and other related provisions. Offences relating to begging, lodging and being found in or upon enclosed premises under the Act should no longer be used after the repeal date. The Government focus is no longer on criminalising homelessness rather, ensuring individuals receive the right support at the right time, as set out in “A National Plan to End Homelessness”.
